printed it on blue paper to create the look of water. Then they created fish and glued them onto their printed paper.

Pointillism Butterflies
Students
discovered that the comics in newspapers are colored with tiny dots. They also
learned about Georges Seurat, the artist who invented pointillism by using only
dots in his paintings. They applied their discoveries in creating a butterfly
colored only with dots. The students also made sure their butterflies showed symmetry.

Cave Art
First grade students learned about some of the first artwork ever made;
cave paintings! When students came to art, the room had transformed into a
cave. The tables were turned on their sides, with brown paper taped to them.
Then students took a virtual tour of the cave at Lascaux ,
looked at photos of the cave paintings, and read the book, "The Cave
Painter of Lascaux" by Roberta Angeletti. Students drew their own
versions of the cave paintings and then crumpled their brown papers to make
their paper look like the cave wall.

Building Klimt
First Grade students
looked at artwork by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. They noticed that he often
painted with gold paint and used swirly lines, black and white rectangles and
different colored circles. Students read "The Magical Tree" by Myriam Ouyessad, which is a fictional story explaining a couple of Klimt's most famous artworks. Students listened carefully to specific directions such as, “draw flowers at
the bottom of your page that have green stems and pink and purple flowers. Draw
brown swirls above these flowers.” Students discovered that everyone’s artwork
turned out differently even though each student was following the same
directions.

about primary colors and how to mix paint to get secondary colors. They painted
mice with primary and secondary colors and glued them in the order of the color
wheel.
Kandinsky!
First Grade students looked at artwork by Wassily Kandinsky and discussed how the artwork made them feel or what the artwork made them think about. They also looked at his famous artwork "concentric circles" which is a color study to see which colors look best next to each other. Students did their own color study on six circles. They experimented with the way colors look next to each other. The next week students revisited Kandinsky's artwork and discovered that Kandinsky often painted while listening to music. Then they listened to different kinds of music to paint the background.

Cut Paper Penguin
First grade students practiced
their cutting and gluing skills when creating this cut-paper penguin. They also
learned how faces can show emotion. They discovered eyes play an important part
of showing emotion. They chose an emotion for their penguin, and created a cut

Winslow Homer Seascapes
First
Grade students looked at artwork by Winslow Homer. Like many artists, he
painted what was around him. He lived near the ocean so he painted many
seascapes. He also liked to show the power of the ocean, so many of his seascapes show waves crashing into each other and on the shore. Students painted two papers, one for the sea, one for the sky. Then they ripped the sea paper to create a jagged white edge, for the waves. They glued these to the sky. Finally, they created a sailboat with cut paper. They glued these boats to a popsicle stick to actually "sail" it through the waves.
Only One You/Nadie Como Tu
All
students in the school read “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, which celebrates how
each person is unique. Then students created a unique fish to be part of our
“school” of fish!
