Self-Portrait Comparisons

Kindergarten students drew self-portraits at the beginning of the school year and drew and painted self-portraits again at the end of the school year. Look at how these artists have grown!














 


Starry Night Paintings

Kindergarten artists were introduced to the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most famous artists of all time. They discovered that he was one of the inventors of impressionism. Van Gogh like the lines his paint brush would make in thick paint, and he painted this way in most of his artwork. They looked at his most famous painting, "Starry Night", and painted their  own version of starry night, by using short brushstrokes, just like Van Gogh.

Mondrian Masterpieces

Kindergarten students discovered the work of Piet Mondrian. They learned that he first painted landscapes, but then decided to break down landscapes into their simplest form: black lines and primary colors. It was almost like he was painting the “ingredients” for his landscapes. Students learned to identify the primary colors and made artwork inspired by Mondrian.

Los estudiantes de kinder descubrieron las obras de Piet Mondrian. Ellos aprendieron que al principio el pinto paisajes, pero luego decidió desarmar los paisajes en sus formas más simples: líneas negras y colores primarios. Fue como si estuviera pintando los “ingredientes” de sus paisajes. Los estudiantes aprendieron a identificar los colores primarios y crearon obras de arte inspiradas por Mondrian.

"The Magic Raincoat" by Ryan David

Kindergarten students read The Magic Raincoat by Ryan David. They brainstormed ideas of what they would wish for if they had a magic raincoat. Students created portraits of themselves wearing a raincoat with crayons, and added raindrops and puddles with white crayon. Then the magic happened...they painted blue watercolor over their background, and the raindrops and puddles magically appeared! They learned that artists call this technique a watercolor resist.

 


Yayoi Kusama Still Life

Kindergarten students learned that artists will often gather small objects together to practice drawing and painting them, and that this is called a still life. They looked at many different examples of still life drawings and paintings. Then they drew flowers in a vase, a popular choice for a still life. They also studied contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and discovered that she loves polka dots and paints them on all of her artworks. The. they painted their flower still life with dots too.

Printmaking in Kindergarten

Kindergarten students explored printmaking by printing objects such as q-tips and paper towel rolls dipped in paint to create owls. They used sponges dipped in paint to create castles.

Monster Cityscape

Kindergarten students discussed the meaning of cityscape, as well as what shapes we can find in pictures of cityscapes. Students drew their own cityscape with oil pastel, and painted it with tempera cakes.

Then students read “Monsters Don’t Eat Broccoli” by Barbara Jean Hicks. They drew a monster and created the monster’s skin by pressing legos into stamp pads.

Neighborhood Collage

Kindergarten students combined shapes to create cut-paper houses in a neighborhood. They added details with markers. Finally, they used white paint to make their neighborhood look snowy.

Textured Chameleons

Kindergarten students learned that we use the word texture when we’re describing how something feels. Students created texture rubbings with texture plates. Then they explored making texture with paint by using texture scrapers in tempera paint. Students saw a video clip of a chameleon changing color, and read A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni. Then they traced chameleons, cut them out of their texture rubbings, and glued them to painted texture background. Finally, they wrote about where their chameleon could be hiding.

Line Monsters

Kindergarten students practiced proper painting techniques while painting different kinds of lines. Then they painted between the lines with colors in rainbow order. Finally, they cut out eyes and mouths to turn their line paintings into monsters.





Only One You/Nadie Como Tu

All students in the school read “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, which celebrates how each person is unique. Then students created a unique fish to be part of our “school” of fish!

Dr. Seuss fish

Kindergarten students read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. They drew  and painted their own fish in the style of Dr. Seuss.

Romero Britto Inspired Paintings





Kindergarten students looked at artwork by Romero Britto, a current pop-artist who lives in Miami, Florida. Students chose a simple subject and then broke that subject into different sections, and then broke up the background into different sections as well. They painted each section differently, and added patterns and repetition of lines and polka dots in some of the sections.

Kindergarten Castles

Kindergarten students drew castles and printed the castle bricks with sponges. After taking a virtual tour of Warwick Castle in England, they used crayons and cut paper to add details to their castles.
