El Sol Art is moving to Instagram!

This blog has been a labor of love over the past few years, and I've loved sharing our school's art with you. I'm no longer going to use this page to showcase the art from our school, but will instead use Instagram to share everything we're working on. Please continue to follow the El Sol artroom on Instagram!

Underground Drawings

Students discussed what sort of animals and insects create tunnels and chambers underground. They looked at different books that illustrate the tunnels underground. Then students created their own unique and inventive tunnels and chambers, complete with beds, kitchens, even chambers with disco balls for dance parties!

Self-Portrait Comparisons

Kindergarten students drew self-portraits at the beginning of the school year and drew and painted self-portraits again at the end of the school year. Look at how these artists have grown!

Starry Night Paintings

Kindergarten artists were introduced to the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most famous artists of all time. They discovered that he was one of the inventors of impressionism. Van Gogh like the lines his paint brush would make in thick paint, and he painted this way in most of his artwork. They looked at his most famous painting, "Starry Night", and painted their  own version of starry night, by using short brushstrokes, just like Van Gogh.

Blue Dog

Third Grade students studied artist George Rodrigue, who lived in New Orleans, Louisiana. Rodrigue is famous for his paintings of “Blue Dog.” Students discovered that Rodrigue’s “Blue Dog” isn’t always blue. Sometimes Rodrigue paints his dog different colors with different backgrounds to symbolize the emotions and events in the United States.

Students drew and painted their own version of Blue Dog, complete with a story explaining the setting of their painting.

Frida Kahlo Inspired Portraits

Students learned about portraits and discussed work by famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Students created Self-Portraits using symbols that were unique to them and then wrote what their symbols mean.

Bubble wrap prints

First Grade students used bubble wrap to print. They painted bubble wrap with blue tempera paint and then printed it on blue paper to create the look of water. Then they created fish and glued them onto their printed paper.

Still Life Paintings

Fourth grade students used their observational drawing skills to draw and paint a still life.

Pointillism Butterflies

Students discovered that the comics in newspapers are colored with tiny dots. They also learned about Georges Seurat, the artist who invented pointillism by using only dots in his paintings. They applied their discoveries in creating a butterfly colored only with dots. The students also made sure their butterflies showed symmetry.

Paper Mache Bowls

Fifth Grade students explored form and 3-dimensional art by creating bowls with paper mache. They colored their bowls with either warm or cool colored tissue paper, and painted the bottom of their bowls with tempera paints.

Weaving

Fifth grade students created these weavings on cardboard looms. They strung on the warp strings, and then used both tabby weave and checkerboard weave techniques to create their weavings. Some students even embellished their weavings with beads.

Romare Bearden Inspired Artwork

Third Grade students looked at artwork by Romare Bearden. They discovered that he created collages from cut up photos, paintings and other papers. He included people and places that were important to him. They found that he loved music and grew up during the Harlem Renaissance, so instruments are often featured in his artwork. Third graders picked an instrument of their choice, and drew just a portion of it, emphasizing a part of the instrument that they found interesting. They colored their instrument with oil pastels and created a piano border with marker.

Surrealist Inspired Paintings

Fifth graders studied the art of the surrealists, especially Salvador Dali. Students watched a video clip  called "Get Surreal! With Salvador Dali" to help them understand surrealism. Students used surrealist methods to come up with subject matter to create surrealist artwork. Four methods they could use are transformation, dislocation, metamorphosis and juxtaposition.
