Fifth Grade Students used traditional symbols from Africa as well as symbols unique to them to create Adire Cloth.
Adire Cloth is native to the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Artists in Nigeria use a starchy paste made from the cassava plant to paint their designs on to the cloth. Then they use blue dye made from the indigo plant to dye the fabric. The cassava paste acts as a resist, allowing the dye to color the fabric everywhere except where the designs were painted.
